Math Assessment Review

We will be having a math assessment this Tuesday. We discussed what we've learned and you can find our thoughts below.

S/A - we should know how to describe a pattern with a pattern rule. A pattern rule describes how it starts and how it goes on (PC).

K- we should be able to skip count to solve problems

DD - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10...

MZ - we need to be able continue the pattern

  • TI - we can use different colours to extend patterns
  • SK- we can use a hundreds chart
  • HK - we can use T-charts to extend patterns
  • KW - we can use a calculator
  • SP - we can use some multiplication
  • AA - we can use pattern blocks or manipulative
  • DD - we can use numbers lines to help us skip count

PC - we can answer questions use the APE (answer, prove, expand) strategy to answer questions

3) Finish revising and editing your personal decalogues

Today, in writing we developed a success criteria to use when editing and revising our decalogues. This criteria is a simple list of things to 'look for' when revising. Hopefully, we'll get better throughout the school year at using these criterions.

Success Criteria for Personal Decalogues
  • Write with detail
    • Exciting words (verbs, nouns, adjectives)
    • Help the reader visualize, by describing how you did things.
  • Capitals at the beginning and periods at the end of sentences.
  • No spelling mistakes or grammatical errors
  • You should have TEN ideas that are different
  • Start every sentence with a different word
  • I’ve tried my best to share as much about myself as possible

4) Keep your Healthy Eating Assignment charts up to date
5) Milk order forms home
6) Halloween letter home

October 23rd

1) Grade 4 science due tomorrow
2) Finish math textbook work

  • Grade 4's, pg. 22 #1-2
  • Grade 5's pg. 16 #1-2
3) Start working on health assignment - DUE Monday, October 29th

  • Today, students started a health assignment in class. We'll talk about it more in class tomorrow, but tonight and tomorrow morning students should be recording what specific foods they have for snacks, dinner and breakfast. Charts should be used to fill in specific details about the foods they will eat.
3) Finish your 5 sentences on your Ten Times Challenge sheet.

Today, in class we reviewed our personal decalogues. We then found the 'weakest' sentence (usually the shortest) and rewrote it five times. This is a simple revision technique to try and make us think about alternate ways we can structure a sentence(s). There is no right way to do this.

Below you will find my weakest sentence (in red) and the nine revisions that the class came up with.

Once, while riding my bike I fell off and hit my head extremely hard.
  1. One day while riding my extremely cool bike, I fell and smashed my head like a rock.
  2. One time while riding my fancy bike, I fell and smashed my head, and needed several stitches
  3. While riding my extremely cool bike, I stumbled off my bike and I needed stitches.
  4. While riding my bike, my bike tripped over a huge rock. I fell off and got really injured.
  5. A day that I was riding my I then fell on my head extremely hard and needed help.
  6. I was riding my bike on an extremely hot day. I was looking up at the sun and wasn’t paying attention to where I was going and then fell.
  7. One day in the afternoon, I was riding my bike alone and I was riding on a street and I fell off my bike and smashed my head on the bars of the bike.
  8. One day I was riding my bike and I let go of my peddles and fell down and had to go the hospital.
  9. Looking down at the pavement, I knew I was in for a hard landing. Unfortunately, my head was going to hit the pavement first, and it did. The thud was weird, the blood gushing out of my forehead was even worse.

My Cat Says Hello - Meow

We've Changed our Look, but Everything's Still Here!

To be honest, I grew a little bored of the look of our class blog, so I changed it! Everything we need is still here, but may be in a different place. The most important links for students are now on the righthand side.

Decalogue Writing Activity

Our class has started writing decalogues. A decalogue is simply a list of 10 ideas or beliefs that someone has about something. The most famous decalogue is the Ten Commandments. This weekend, you should complete the ROUGH DRAFT of the PERSONAL decalogue you started today (Friday).

Below is a list of ideas for our decalogues. We brainstormed together and came up with this great list. The list is composed of dot jots (bullet points). I have also put an included my rough draft of my own decalogue if you're having a hard time not knowing where or how to start. Finally, please try and use our class success criteria when creating your decalogue.

Success Criteria

  • I have written ten detailed points
  • All my sentences are about the same topic
  • I haven't created a favourites list (Eg. my favourite sports, my favourite foods)
  • Each new point starts with a different word
  • I have only used the word I to start one of my sentences
  • I have a list of TEN points about me

My Example that I shared with the Class (this is a rough draft!)

The Ten Things I’ve Done in my Life to Look Silly

  1. The giant rug burn on my nose made me look very silly. I thought I was Super Man and jumped off my living room chair.
  2. Falling on my back in a massive mud puddle when playing flag football with my grade 7 students made me look very very dirty.
  3. When I first got my license I accidentally drove the wrong way home when trying to drive from Toronto to North Bay. I ended up in London, Ontario before realizing I was driving in the wrong direction.
  4. I once ran full steam into a jungle gym with a sweater tied around my face. OUCH!
  5. My dad sat me down and told me he was disappointed in me, I was extremely embarrassed.
  6. Once, while riding my bike I fell of and hit my head extremely hard!
  7. Walking up the stairs, then tripping is really hard to do for a grown man. I still managed to do this with a full cup of coffee once. Needless to say, I had coffee all over me!
  8. There was a giant gash in my hand after accidentally driving a riding lawnmower into a huge rock. I was looking down at the ground to make sure I didn’t run over a tiny shrub, and failed to see the massive chunk right in front of me.
  9. Scoring on your teams’ own basket in basketball is a great way to lose favour with your teammates.
  10. Jello streaming out of my nose was one of the most bizarre experiences of my life. Laughing while wolfing down Jello is never a good idea.
